alpha blend questions

first. I read data from backbuffer directly and alphablend with a offscreen buffer,then write back to backbuffer. it''s very slow! second. I SetRenderState(D3DRS_ALPHABLENDENABLE,TRUE),and draw the offscreen buffer in a quad using DrawPrimitive to backbuffer,it''s very fast! I know read from Video memory is very slow.but why the second is that fast???
