Importing models into the Gaia Terrain Engine

I''m trying to export a static mesh from Maya 5.0 to an X-file and get it into the Gaia Terrain Engine (the engine that came with the book "Real Time 3D Terrain Engines Using C++ and DirectX9"). I''ve asked on the author''s site but no one has responded yet so I figured I''d ask here. All I''m trying to do is swap my X-file with one that came with the engine. It seems like no matter what exporting settings I use, nothing shows up in the terrain engine. Has anyone done this before? Any suggestions?
