whether to resume the game or restart it??

hi all i am developing a game for mobile in J2ME, here is an issue , suppose during game play, a call arrives, or the user quits the game, what i have to do is to save the game state, now when user wants to resume the game he has to click continue, i want to know is how i know at this point that i have to load the saved game, or to start a new one. one solution can be i make another RMS (record managment sys) a asign true value to boolean variable, and read this while coming back to game and make decision according to that. is it fine? or if not then plz tell me some better technique. bye

You know if a valid save state exists when starting right?

if(SaveStateExists) resume(); else new();

Or, give the user a continue and new option. If they choose new, get rid of the save state.

My take on the whole thing:

Resume if application was paused due to a call, etc... But restart if user exists the MIDlet in some way (by forcing it to quit, or quitting with commands ingame).

It''s very frustrating if the user is on a very hard level and all of a sudden a call comes. The user answers, talks and expects to get back to cracking that hard level. But poof! All of a sudden there is no savestate, he must redo the whole level (in the worst case, all levels up to it). So my advice; have a save state if the user is on the phone.

Heh, I''m glad that I''m working with Symbian - no problem with interrupts, app running in the background in the pause mode

all the games i see that allow a resume function allow it as a menu choice when you restart the game after forced exit. the default menu choice is resume but you can scroll down to a new command. the new command deletes the old saved game
