i created my forums from scratch using ASP.NET, C#, and SQL Server. The only thing that I used were icons from phpBB, but it is NOT phpBB even though it looks like it. I just used phpBB as a guideline for what features a forum should have (since it was my first time making one).

Anyways, lemme know what you guys think:

I''m rather fond of Invision power board. It''s got a load of features and it''s pretty easy to mod as well (in fact I''m writing a gallery modification for it at this moment). It is free, they just call the free version the trial download version (which allows you to use it indefinately for whatever purpose as long as you leave the copyright on the botttom)

As for how you go about making one you''ll probably want to use either PHP or ASP(which actually isn''t a language, but I believe most people use VBScript when using ASP). You''ll also need a database, MySQL is used quite a bit but you''ll find others as well. To communicate with the database you use a language called SQL (Structured query language). The basics are rather simple but it can get very complicated (however with some website forums you''re unlikely to encounted horribly complex queries). If you want to put this on the web you''ll need a host that supports either PHP or ASP plus some form of database (You don''t have to have a database but you''d end up writing a simple db anyway which if you want to be decent and fast may require a fair amount of effot). Personally I''d recomend downloading one to actually use. Making one will take time, but it''d be a good learning experience.

Nice. Wish you''d kick the table habit, though.

Nice BB, but I see 1 thing that bothers me: at the top, you have a navigation-bar, where each link is actually 2 images. But the images just contain text. These images slow down the page a lot, and you need JavaScript to do the hover-effect. If you want to see how I did a similar bar with only text, and the same effect like you (normal text + hover = different color + border): http://users.pandora.be/tommycarlier/eu. At the left you have a text-only navigation-zone. At the top, you also have a navigation-bar with only 2 tiny images (258 bytes per image), that produce a nice effect. I haven't used JavaScript for any of these effects, and they're fast as hell. The key element is CSS.
