Scene Graph Sorter

I need help with programming a render state sorter. I have a spatially sorted scene graph. The scene graph is culled and the remaining nodes are sorted to be rendered by render state. Lets for the sake of simplicity consider the culled scene graph to only contain render state and geometry nodes. What is the best way to sort this scene graph? Is there a general algorithm one can use that groups similar nodes in a tree together? Any resources on the web on sorting a scene graph? Any help is appreciated.
