Player - Object Interaction Modelling

Hey All, I am uni project student who is working on a project dealing with dynamic terrain interaction between object/terrain and user over a networked shared 3d environment. eg pushing,throwing, pulling, holding, climbing objects I have to develop a prototype of such an application. From a modelling point of view i just want to know what current gaming engines use to model and simulate object interaction effects so that is looks realistic. All i can think of is: Collision Detection, Dead reckoning, Object Trajectory and Newton Physics. If someone can kickstart my brain and list anything i''m missing that would be appreciated.
