How light efects in 3d games are made?

I''m just interested, how do they do light effects in 3D games? Please explain as simply as possible

For "static" lighting effects (for example the ones you see in a quake level) it is wise to use what DigitalChaos said; lightmaps.
And for the "aura". I''m not really sure what you''re talking about, but if you mean something like a "star" where there is a light you can use a blended/masked image and "billboard" it...

In direct3d for example you''ve got a few light types like a point light(emits light in every direction), directional light(the sun for example) or a spotlight(like ah spotlight )

You can also add an emmisive property to those lights so it looks like they are lit(for maybe something like a LED)

Besides that.. light in 3d is a lot of calculations. Does this light beam hit that wall, where is the shadow of an object and that kind of things.
