360 Degree Fisheyes for spheremaps?

Is there any way to generate a spheremap from 6 skybox faces? 360 degree projection rendering wouldn''t work because the projection uses cotangents and it''d be infinity.... How are spheremaps usually generated? Are they just imitated from not actually 360 projections? Thanks so much!
