getting window instead of blank full screen

I have typed in two programs, each one in direct draw following someone else''s code and each one is supposed to switch to full screen direct draw mode. I am getting a window instead of a blank/black full screen. It is switching to 640*480 mode, though, and everything compiles fine. Can anyone help me here? I am using direct draw 9 sdk and visual studio .net (C++) - a windows application.
