I''m wondering if there is a way to initalize OpenGL without a HWND object (on Windows); or is there a way to get the HWND object without actually passing it?

using a wrapper such as GLUT or SDL means you dont have to get the HWND varible yourself to create the opengl context, however if you dont want to use a wrapper than you are stuck with getting one as you need it to create the context to draw to

Yes, you just initialise it, none of the relevant wgl/gl initialisation functions take an HWND handle... </pedantic>

You can use an HDC from anywhere to initialise opengl, whether it came from a window or not, however not all of the behaviour you want (if any) may be supported, and it may not even initialise.
