DDS header "magic number"?

Does anyone know the value of the "magic number" at the top of a DDS file? MSDN describes it as a four-character code without any indication whatsoever of what the code is supposed to represent. Is it some aribtrary value, or is it calculated based on the the data in the DDS file itself? If it''s calculated, can you provide an algorithm? Thanks in advance for any help.
It''s "DDS ". Note the space at the end.

Use a hex editor if you have an example DDS file. Open the file and look for yourself at what the number is. Maybe check 2 for consistancy. Will that get you what you want?

Ah, that was very silly of me. You know, now that I think of it, I do recall seeing "DDS " somewhere in the documentation, but it didn''t register in my brain. Thanks very much.
