The GameDev.net FreeBook is relevant to game designers, developers, and those interested in learning more about the challenges in game development. The free ebook is available through CRC Press by clicking here. The Curated Books The Art of Game Design: A Book of Lenses, Second Edition, by Jesse Schell Presents 100+ sets of questions, or different lenses, for viewing a game’s design, encompassing diverse fields such as psychology, architecture, music, film, software engineering, theme park design, mathematics, anthropology, and more. Written by one of the world's top game designers, this book describes the deepest and most fundamental principles of game design, demonstrating how tactics used in board, card, and athletic games also work in video games. It provides practical instruction on creating world-class games that will be played again and again. View it here. A Practical Guide to Indie Game Marketing, by Joel Dreskin Marketing is an essential but too frequently overlooked or minimized component of the release plan for indie games. A Practical Guide to Indie Game Marketing provides you with the tools needed to build visibility and sell your indie games. With special focus on those developers with small budgets and limited staff and resources, this book is packed with tangible recommendations and techniques that you can put to use immediately. As a seasoned professional of the indie game arena, author Joel Dreskin gives you insight into practical, real-world experiences of marketing numerous successful games and also provides stories of the failures. View it here. An Architectural Approach to Level Design This is one of the first books to integrate architectural and spatial design theory with the field of level design. The book presents architectural techniques and theories for level designers to use in their own work. It connects architecture and level design in different ways that address the practical elements of how designers construct space and the experiential elements of how and why humans interact with this space. Throughout the text, readers learn skills for spatial layout, evoking emotion through gamespaces, and creating better levels through architectural theory. View it here. Copy Please?

60 posts in this topic

I have a favor that I would like to ask of our design forum regulars. I know I''m the first to denounce those guys who post Help Wanteds in the Design Forum, but if I put this anywhere else, it won''t get seen by the people I need. As many of you know, the website of my group, Landfish.com, has been in development for as long as I''ve been coming to GDNet. We''ve designed it four times, and scrapped four designs, losing months of work in the process. We want to get it JUST right. In the end, we want the website to be more than just another gamedeveloper''s website. We want people to be able to go there to rant about stuff, to share ideas, to get involved. Or to denounce me on my home turf, fine whatever... But our latest (and greatest) design includes copy, or testaments from various people about how cool we are. But we don''t have any copy. So I want to get some from you guys at GDNet, under whatever professional names you go by. Now, I''m not asking anyone to be dishonest and say that we''ve made great games or anything; we haven''t. But the premise for the website is ideas. My team is freakin full of ideas... very different ideas. You''ve seen alot of that through me on this very site. Can you guys just reply here with what you think of the posts I''ve made and the ideas I''ve shared/taken from all all of you (and give me permission to quote you on a website with your real name and company title?) Try to make it sound like a review for a movie or something. This might be viewed by venture capital, so keep it serious (kinda...) Thank you in advance to anyone who does. Thankyou thankyou thankyou. I really need this to make the site work. ====== "The unexamined life is not worth living." -Socrates "Question everything. Especially Landfish." -Matt

oh, c''mon people! I need this for the website! GDNet people stick together, right? (''cept for Howland...)

Here, I know it''s hard to think of, so I''ll help you out. When I say: "Landfish is..." what''s the first word that pops into your mind? Crazy? Gay? Anarchist? Revolutionary? Stupid?

Even if it''s any of the above, write it anyway, so that I can legitimately claim you said it...

Thanks.

Thank god, ok i''m just no good at this stuff but here goes..

From my experience at gamedev.net talking with many Game Designers i''ve found that the energy that derives from Landfish to be inspirational. The desire to solve, argue and promote possiblities seem very much a natural element of the Landfish support that''s been driven in here at Gamedev.net Game Design Corner.

How''s that for a starter/pointer? You can add my name and all the relevent details if you wish to use it sofar?! Must think again, oh no.

I love Game Design and it loves me back.

When I think of the word ''LandFish'', I think of giant fish that walk/talk on land. I think its because I''m really unimaginative.

well, I''m _a little_ new here (a couple weeks), so I''m not really one to reply, but I took a look at the last couple months of topics, and I can say three things about landfish :

1>He posts a damn lot,
2>he has a lot of groupies for a designer who''s still working on his web page }:>. . . (no offense intended to said groupies, see #3)
3>mainly because he''s Warren Spector''s lovechild.

feel free to paraphrase as necessary, and I''m known professionally as Hank the Tender Plumber.

OK... My $(2*rant/100) if you really give a smeg

Landfish is more than a person, landfish is a man with ideas. He is more than just a crazed anarchist that people take him for. The ideas that this guy has is just freaking amazing! And I do not exaggerate.

Just my small addition, hope you don''t take it seriously though (dons the flame-proof jacket)..

Oh yeah, and GDNeters DO stick together

OK, I lied, one more email before I leave for a week. I''m an addict, I can''t help myself.

The stuff you guys have got is really great so far... just as a preview, the copy will be seen one at a time, like a review or something. If anyone ever calls you up and asks about us, just say what you said about me. This is what it''ll be like.

Do you guys see how this works? I have access to some venture capital contacts, and to get at the money I''ll need to make it LOOK like there''s a lot there when there is really very little. This is how the whole freakin industry is. Plus, be nice to me now and I might be able to help you guys out if I get the money, right?

So can I have your permission to quote you all in that way? Any more contributions will be enourmously appreciated...

Ummm... my last name is in my sig. Chris ''Bennett'' I think you will find . You could include my other one, but I will change that to say the following:

"Landfish is more than a person, landfish is a man with ideas. He is more than just a crazed anarchist that people take him for. The ideas that this guy has is just freaking amazing! And I do not exaggerate. But the man is insane. A complete lunatic ! That''s the kind of attitude that makes things happen!"

Like it? Remove the insanity parts if you want a more ''professional'' look (lets not get into the professional debate here either )

Well for me the Landfish is the Goblin Messiah, the savior of their race.
Landfish initiated a new way of thinking in this forum and many other people followed his example.

A lot has changed in our minds since then about NPC''s,stat indicators, magic, storyline, economics, etc.

But it all has its start at "End Goblin Genocide" post.

Well...

Hey Guys,

Just as a preface, I''m Landfish''s head writer, and head Landfish himself has asked me to monitor this while he''s away for the week. You probably don''t recognize me...but I''m here, lurking in the shadows, always

Anyway, this is great stuff so far, seriously, but I just want to clarify this. I know most of you have only been exposed to our project co-ordinator, who goes by the name "Landfish" ''round these parts. But, Landfish is the group name, not his personal nickname So, while all of you are hearing these (oftentimes crazy) rants coming from the mouth of one individual, more often than not he speaks for the group as a whole. So, what we''re looking for here are quotes that refer to the team, not an individual. Which I know is hard, because you''ve only been exposed to Landfish in the singular So, if you feel that it''s easier to leave comments about him in particular, that''s fine...I''m just concerned about editing the quotes afterwards, because the website isn''t about one person, it''s to represent the team. Also, we want to make sure that we have everyone''s complete permission to post these quotes in the approximate format stated above. And, like I said, nothing will be changed except to make the quotes plural instead of singular, if need be.

Well, I''ll leave you to commenting again, and I''ll be sure to drop in and check on things, and keep you all in line every once in a while

Thanks guys...this really is so incredibly cool of all of you!
-Matt

OK... then I append my quotes, and extend my welcome to you "friend of landfish" .

"From what I have seen of Landfish, there are some pretty whacky things going on over there. If the kind of inspirational posts that come out of the Landfishian mind are anything to go by, it will be well worth your time to see what they have to offer... Did I mention that the Landfish are crazy!.. Just kidding"

Is that the kind of stuff you are after? It is 100% truth as well

"Gaming needs Landfish like fish need bicycles. Landfish, that is. How else would they get around?"

"If they had as many answers as they had questions, I wouldn''t question the answers."

But seriously

"Landfish isn''t always right. It''s MUCH more than that."

Are these the kinds of things you''re looking for?

"Landfish, Mohammed, has nobody noticed the resemblance? I haven''t, but it was a nice comment to make."

"Goblins of the world, Unite!"
