Do no make your pages look cool. They won''t be.
The above can easily be seen into action on any young teen girl''s pop idol-worshipping website. Flashy colors everywhere, animated gifs staining the page, three midis playing at once (THE HORROR!! ;.
, marquees all over the place...
If you want a really neat webpage, think of what you need. Consider what could be added. Ask yourself if you really need all that extra junk after all. Realize you don''t.
Look at the forums. How many images can you see, excluding the mini icons used for emotes and the likes? The Gamedev.net logo and a banner ad. The rest? Just cleverly-placed DIVs with various shades of blue->black along with matching, well-contrasting text. Does it look cool? Yeah, you could say that. Is it major eye-candy. No. But then you realize, you''re not here to see spiffy pictures. You''re here to read posts (on the message board, for instance). Most of the time, that''s what people do. I think very few people have actually stopped to look at the layout, and wondered, why aren,t there more spiffy pictures all over the place? This is because spiffy pictures are not the focus here.
