Thats very impressive! Is there any more information about it or is it closed b/c its a for sale product?

I think I once found a paper on the internet somewhere about using L-systems to generate cities. Try using google to find it.

That project is pretty closed, but I can tell you the basics of how it works, or at least the ideas that a friend of mine and I had before he tried to make a product out of it.

I may write an article on how it works. I''ve been thinking about doing that for a while.
One cool application of volumetric data is the old "metaballs" demo effect. It''s not quite the same as voxels, but the idea is similar (you have a 3d grid that contains data at each grid point). It wouldn''t be too useful for landscapes, but if you turn it inside out you can make really nice 3d caves with a semi-constant triangle density.
