if its a text .x file you can open it in wordpad and find the texture file name and change it

I think what he meant was "Is there some way to change it inside the program, i.e. having various skins for one X-file model?"

(I''m actually wondering the same thing)

Look at the loading process of a .X file...only the texture filenames are supplied to you. You actually have to loop through all of them and create each texture from the specified file. This means that if you know the other texture filenames, you could load them, too.

However, I don''t know of a way to store multiple ''skins'' in an X-file. Perhaps, you could store them externally in another file (quake3 does this).

This is actually pretty easy, considering that textures and meshes aren''t coupled together - only the mesh and the texture filename is.
