What is the SDL

Recommended Posts

SDL is a cross platform libary that provides graphics, input handling, event handling and audio. It handles all of the window setup etc so code you write on say windows can compile on linux and work just fine. I''d recomend checking it out especially if you''re a beginner, you''d probably find it easier to use than something such as DirectX.

The API is perfectly good and easy to use. It would be perfect for programming games (Commericial games use it too, the Linux version of Unreal Tournament 2004 uses it IIRC). Check out the official website here.

SDL is very good. It hides all the complexities of handling OS input and window management, but unfortunatly it''s not very comprehensive in terms of offering easy blitting functnalities or sound interfaces or any high level constructs. Course this is the reason SDL offers the ability to use OpenGL, and this is also the reason they''re are quite a number of add-on libs for SDL.
