Hi, I'm trying to wrap my head around a good technique for generating 3D volumetric clouds for a flight sim. I'm hoping for the final result to be something along these lines: http://www.ofb.net/~niniane/clouds/ http://www.gamasutra.com/features/20040114/wang_01.shtml But I want to generate the clouds procedurally, not have them built by an artist. Among other white papers, demos and sites discussing techniques, I found this old thead here, which was very cool: http://www.gamedev.net/community/forums/topic.asp?whichpage=1&pagesize=20&topic_id=86024 It seems to me that Perlin noise is the obvious place to start in trying to generate something like this. I'm not overly interested in animating these clouds, which should save some considerable processing power, but I am stuck on the fact that every cloud system that uses Perlin uses it in 2D. Obviously in a flight sim clouds play a much more important role and need to be volumetric, so I'm trying to work out if it's possible to use layers of Perlin noise to create something in 3D. So the sky would be split into a 3D grid of cubes, each with a different value generated from the noise, and then using those values to set how many billboards should appear there, and what their alpha values and colours should be. I'd impostor clouds which are further away as an optimisation, and probably use a similar "cheaty" lighting technique to the Microsoft Flight Sim one. Does this seem anywhere near feasible? Has anyone done anything like this before, and if so can you explain how you did it? I'm sort of in the dark here... :o( EDIT - Sorry, I don't know how to make links active on these boards! look up the cloud simulation papers, I remember reading stuff from Nishita and Dobashi papers.

also try markmark.net
