Applying sin wave to a texture

Curious if anyone recommends a good way to apply a sin wave to a ''2d'' 4 vertex graphic?? I hope I don''t have to iterate through every pixel, I am trying to get an effect of heat waves rising off a surface. Also similar to a waving plant at the bottom of the ocean... :/

I am not sure I follow, are you suggesting I use a 16 vertex polygon and shift the vertices ?

I have tried modifying the u and v coordinates of the top left and top right vertices, but the outcome creates a small tearing line as the graphic waves back and forth

edit: rofl, an interesting spelling mistake, sorry !
