best free assembler?
I was wondering what assemblers people would
recommend for game programming in assembler language.
I''m looking for one that''s free, standardized,
and has adquate documentation for a beginner to learn.
Standardised? Dream on.
Each assembler has its own conventions, especially where macros are concerned. Although they''re all basically the same, don''t expect source compatibility (except for trivial programs).
Each CPU has a standard for OP-codes, but not all assemblers even respect those. For instance, the GNU Assembler always puts the instruction arguments in a particular order, regardless of the convention of the CPU (hint: x86 is backwards from most others)
I use the ASL assembler for programming the 6809 (occasionally, anyway), and it''s great. But totally nonstandard (This assembler supports many CPUs, but not x86)
Mark

You don''t even know assembly (or at least you don''t ahve an assembler) and yet you want to make a game in it?
I highly recommend NASM. I use it for most of my assembly projects. IMO it has the cleanest syntax (simplified Intel) and the docs are pretty good. The only complaint I have heard about NASM is its preprocessor, but I can''t see any major problems with it.
