how a floating point number works

I''ve always wondered how a floating point number is stored in memory. I''ve used fixed point a lot and the position of the point is implied by the way you code. With floating point I''d imagine the position of the point in the bits would have to be stored somehow... Does anyone care to explain or point me to a helpful article on the subject?
