How to orient the shadow volume

My basic problem is that most shadow volume tuts have the shadow volume based on the model extend infinite distance... or even get bigger. My problem is Im doing planets and stars... and I need the shadow volume to terminate to a point... or even just use a cone model and orient it correctly. Any ideas how to accomplish this though? I can''t seem to get my head around how to rotate the shadow cone based on the orientation of the planet and star...

You can define a maximum range for shadow extrusion.
It will be possible by setting small numbers instead of those great numbers like 1000000 or 9999999. You can also normalize the extrusion vector and multiply it by the maximum size of your volume.
