multipass rendering?

Hi, I am rendering several passes of an scene and would like to blend them together. What is the preferred method (flexiblity, performance..etc)? 1. - clear frame buffer & depth buffer - render pass 1 - enable blending (one, one) - render pass 2 - render pass 3 - disable blending 2. - render pass 1 to texture 1 - render pass 2 to texture 2 - render pass 3 to texture 3 - setup projection to draw 2d quad over the screen - combine texture 1, 2 & 3 using (combiners, frag program..whatever) 3. - other methods? thanks
