Texture map mapping

(Not sure if this belongs here or the visual arts section)... How do people actually skin models? Most of the time, I don't think people actually paint the skin directly onto the model in the 3d modelling program (although I've seen some programs that do this). Does the programmehave to create a program to export a texture with an 'outline' that designates which point of the texture maps to which vertex on the mesh? Or do most 3d modelling programs allow the artist to export that 'template' texture? Thanks, sak [edited by - coderunner on May 29, 2004 2:29:16 AM]
