I''ve been looking over this code at http://userpages.umbc.edu/~enorth1/tilemapper/tilemap.htm. At the static final byte[][] bgmap = { part, I really don''t understand how to do the matrix and how the images are put in a certain position on the screen. For I want to only use one image "grass.gif" thats 35 x 35. Can anyone help me?

'Matrix' is a poor choice of words on the tute authors part imo. This:

static final byte[][] bgmap = {...}

is an array. If you scroll down and look at the drawMap() method it doesn't get more self explanatory than that.

You should look up arrays so you at least understand them. Then look into what the 'static' and 'final' keywords are for. 'Thinking in Java' by Bruce Eckel would be good for this (its freely available on line; try google).
