Entering rooms (2d)

I''m almost finish with a quite powerfull 2d platforms game engine, but I''d like to know how could I easily and efficiently make code fro when the main character enters a room, for example (such as shops, or just another room in a castle or whatever). Is like loading a sub-level (this is how I''m doing it right now). It is quite a complex routine, so I wanted to implemet something easier for some simple repetitive rooms. what techniques did old NES or SNES use? anyone knows? thanks!
