Profiler?

I have heard many people mention profilers on the various boards. I have surmised that it somehow analyzes your code and tells you what is slowing it down. How exactly do they work? I have never used one, but it sounds like a nifty tool and I''d like to get ahold of one. Are there any free ones that you could recommend?

There are several ways to profile code and most profiling packages are expensive. Some profilers inserting timing instructions into the start and end points of a function to track execution times. Others tally different sets of statistics for different purposes.
