FAST animation of billboarding

hi every one. as the title suggest I am looking for a fast way to animate a billboard. (ex simulate explosions). I am using D3DXCreateTextureFromFileEX() to update the texture of the billboard each frame, but it seems to be slow. so should I create multiple textures and then just switch them, but this I guess will take a lot of memory. by the way I am using c++ and dx9.0

Who cares if it takes a lot of memory, it is still faster than loading the texture off the disk every time. Anyway textures really don''t necessarily take that much memory. A 256 by 256 texture in 32 bit color takes 256 kb of memory.
