Does anyone know of a way to load 3DS MAX (or Alias/Wavefront, or Lightwave 3D) models into a program? I just want to extract the vertex, material, texture, and animation data, and store them to use in my application. If anyone could point me to some good resources (or the file format description), that would be nice.

Well, not the .max itself but rather an exported format like .ase or you can write your own plugin. Maxscript is also a solution and is quite easy to implement. There''s a nice plugin called Flexporter, you can customize it to your needs.
