Book suggestions?
Hi there..
I want to get my hands on a couple books dealing with game programming/game design. Preferably in OpenGL. I've done a search here on the forums, but it seems as though the book recomendations are based on the level of skills rather than "which books are best/better", and I would really like to buy the right book this time (I've bought the wrong one so many times):, so maybe you guys could help me out a bit..
Anyway, I have 3-4 years of programming experience, mainly from Delphi. I've also coded some microcontrollers in C, and I'm familiar with assembly. Curently, I'm adjusting to C++ syntax I've also been doing (rather crappy) demos using OpenGL for almost a year. I'm looking for something to get me started doing games, but which would also fill in the gaps in what I allready know. So to sum it up: Something to cover stuff past the "hello opengl app", but yet not *too* advanced, or at least, not *only* advanced.
I did some searching at amazon, and found a few books which looked OK:
- Rules of Play: Game Design Fundamentals
- 3D Game Engine Design (I know this is advance, but thought I'd might use it later, and the math there seems quite extensive and usefull)
- Games Programming: Gems... series
Any thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appriciated

Rules of Play and the Gems series are great books, but they may not be what you''re looking for. Rules of Play is a kind of theoretical game design book that covers all types of games. Game Design and Architecture may be a better book for you. The Gems series has a ton of great articles and lots of useful stuff, but it''s not comprehensive.
If you want a game programming book, you may want to check out Game Coding Complete (it''s ok) or Core Techniques & Algorithms in Game Programming. While I''m not a fan of Primier Press, The RPG in DirectX is popular and one of the few books that actually goes into game programming as well as how to use DirectX and\or OpenGL.
If you want a Graphics techniques book, Realtime Rendering is very, very good. It doesn''t have the tons of code snippets that your average game graphics book has and it doesn''t teach you an API, but it goes over core concepts very well. GPU Gems is also a good book if you''re into advanced shader programming (which you seem not to be.)

Thanks for the reply I''ve added the books you mentioned in my wish list at amazon, hopefully I''ll buy a few next week.
Thought I''d buy Game Coding Complete and possebly Game Architecture and Design for starters, then I''ll see

Core technics and algorithms in game programming is also good. Take a look at the book section.

Thanks for all the replies
I''ll order "Beginning OpenGL", "Game Coding Complete" and "Game Architecture and Design" later today. Will probably order "Core Techniques & Algorithms in Game Programming" next week.
Thanks again for the suggestions.

I have written a brief review of my favourite books, you can see it half way down page here: http://www.petra.demon.co.uk/Games/
