i know there has been UPLINK i know there has been DARK SIGNS and probably a few others... but all of them were UNINTERRESTING after a few hours of gameing, weren't they? but as far as i know there has never been a Multiplayer one?!?!? would you be interrested in a multiplayer script based hacking game build from programmers for programmers? if yes please reply! i have got a few quite nice ideas already but i want to hear YOU! i would be useing java, server/client Arch. the game would be mostly text based to keep the "1337" style! using its own scriptinglang.(or java scripting !not Javascript! probably too complex for a game) so to get all this S*** on one point: i want opinions, ideas! right now i'm in the design phase, so your ideas could have a big impact! -------------------------------------------------------------- Me At Home Is Me didn't u know? -------------------------------------------------------------- edit: i'm disapointed about your reaction: right now 12 Views and 0 replies!! is the idea so boring? perhaps those 12+ people aren''t the programmer/hacker types. (I know I''m not), so the game idea neither really appeals nor applies to us.

It''d be like asking old Bingo playing ladies if they thought DOOM was good. Obviously, they have no real basis to answer.

...dont worry, your target audience will pop in here eventually with input.

I have no idea how to Implement somthing like that and make it fun but i just get this feeling in the back of my head that says, "God that sounds awsome". Hacking into some poor basterds computer in a race to see who can get through to the others and retrive some peice of data(maybe). Some kind of toolkit with Expandability maybe, ie you have prefab scripts to crack passwords ect. but the really good people write thier own Hacks to get though the system. Maybe there could be a Gang up aginist on target, FBI Headquarters anyone.... of course this would all be inside of the game universe. So the FBI doesnt need to knock on my door and drag me into an alley at 2:00 AM.

Heh, yeah sounds good except..
That I don''t need a hacking game. Tryed uplink and got tired of it, even being unrealistic. If I want to hack I would just get into a free hacking zone server and let myself go on.

Last thing, why would multiplayer make that game so cool? And how would the players interact with each other?

I think Uplink is probably the most accessible hacking game I've seen, so I'd suggest taking your inspiration from their UI. When I originally saw it, I discussed an MP version with a Sysadmin buddy, and we came up with a number of substantial ideas:

1) DDoS attacks - multiple players are involved in co-opting system privs & frustrating the follow-up trace. Best for teams with relatively even skill all around.
2) Social engineering - one or more players responsible for getting info directly from the organization, these people then provide the gained info to the team members who will do the hacking. Best suited for teams with multiple skill levels at work, and those who play strongly defensive style
3) PVP play - one side plays sysadmins, the other plays hackers.

We came up with a number of ideas in terms of single and multiplayer tools, but those are the heart of our concepts for MP-heavy elements

nononono...
you didnt get the idea...
i thought uplink sucks!
so the idea is to build a virtual internet
a scripting lang
a filesys
and a few very basic commands...
so everybody haves to write everything as a script
himself, pvp based... with money..
so players are able to trade
no powerskilling like in uplink!!
just giv it a thought!

and i really want to prog this stuff
out in J, so not just thinkin about an
idea which could maybe an idea for futur projects...
right now script-parser completed!!
and thx for your replies... go on!

edit:
sure they would be able to exchange pr0n and discuss about their
'1337n355' but take a look at UO: you are also able to smoke weed, doesnt make sense but you are able to, AND its even fun....

I think you''re writing a computer game for programmers, not geeks in general, but programmers specifically. This, IMHO, is a bad idea, not least because there are plenty of better forums for programming skills than a computer game.

To clarify this a bit: main goal of the game would still be having fun and no complex programming knowledge is required. basically the players can write their scripts (scripting language is really basic[Not BASIC or VB but simple]) and run them on their "ingame PC-s" there would be no "ill buy the best tool and evrything does itself (like uplink : lets watch the progress bar)" players could trade their scripts, attack each other or team up against someone or a non player server. the whole thing is ASCII based it supports in game chat simple text html pages ingame mail/messenging all this is realized via ingame scripting so a resourcefull player can alter anything. if u really want to trade pr0n u would have to make it ASCII (greets to the BB ppl) theres a complex logic behind the interaction of the ingame pc-s and servers and even the ingame "os" so many things would be possible. i can see that u could think that i target a too narrow audience, but this wouldnt be massivly multiplayer, i rather hope for a smaller but dedicated community.
im working on a first beta in my spare time, some aspects do already work. u can think of the game kinda like of a cyberpunk rpg without stats (your skills determine what u can do not some abstract numbers)

i would really like to hear some more opinions
(the goal of the game is not to teach anybody how to programm,
its all about the fun)

While I enjoy hacker games and for that matter cyberpunk games, I really do not see the fun in this idea. It seems too raw. There''s not enough gameplay in it, and more scripting. It''s sort of like if you take Warcraft III Map Editor (Frozen Throne), remove all the graphics and everything except the trigger editor (and all required parts). Then people will have to write scripts/triggers and watch them work. It really takes a lot of the fun out. Then again, you haven''t really given the details of this game, so maybe I''m wrong.
