Lets say I have a plot of data points along the curve y = f(x). I know the values of y and x, what I want to do is find an approximation (polynomial i am guessing) of f. What is the correct term for this, so that I can go google for it? Thanks

Try searching for "Nonlinear regression" or "Fit to curve"

If polynomial, then search for Lagrange interpolation.
But this method for a large number (say >10) of points may give a wavy curve.
