3D Sun Effects
Hello All,
I am currently writing a solar system demo and have created the solar system with a sun and planets rotating around the sun. I have all the lighting in place but I want my Sun to look like a Sun and not a textured sphere.
I want to include a corona and any other effects that will make my demo stand out but I dont know where to start with the effects. Some forums have suggested using particle effects, others have suggested Billboarding.
What would be the best way to create a realistic 3D sun?
regards,

oops, that didn''''t work!!!
Lens flare, glow effect, that sorta thing?
There''s a particular (optical) name for the glare around a bright thing but I can''t remember it at the moment... they did it in NFS Underground. Basically you want to cheat high-dynamic-range rendering so as to get the bleeding brightness effect.
Also particle effects for solar flares and stuff - how big is the sun on the screen?

Yeah, lens flare, glow effect thats the sort of stuff I want to do.
I''ve not heard of high-dynamic-range rendering, something to look into. Are there any good articles that you know?
My sun is not huge on the sceen on the original load but you can move very close to it at the moment. I need to set some kind of limit as to how close the camera can get to the sun.
I would also like to have an atmosphere effect on some planets.

You probably need a dynamic outer layer instead of a sphere. Solar flares and such which actually move. I''d imagine a combination of particle effects and similar technology to spring-modelled water would look good.

Bloom?
Theres a good article on glow/bloom on Gamasutra.com: http://www.gamasutra.com/features/20040526/james_01.shtml
I have finished my sun-lens-flare effect in d3d.
