Loading runtime bitmaps!

Windows has some quite useful bitmap-loading functions. Almost all the DX-samples use them to load bitmaps, so I would look there first. Or you could do it like me and write a more generalized graphic-loading system than can take other types of images as well, like gif and jpeg.

Any OS has BMP loader available.

If you want you can use SDL (http://www.libsdl.org) with another lib you''ll find on their website that will allow you to load almost any kind of picture file format

And fortunately this is platform independant
