Direct 3D geometry selection

Does D3D have any build in geometry selection functionality I am overlooking? I rember OpenGL has one where you set a render mode and assign numbers to your objects while rendering then retrieve a "hit buffer". (Its been a while for OpenGL). Thanks, Pest
