try finding some search engines that will let you submit your site, and put <meta> tags at the top of your page (description etc.. i dont know the exact stuff u need to put there)

Most often there is no need to mess with meta tags if you want your page to show in search engines. As far as I know they are mostly useful if you want to avoid the search engines!

Just contact yahoo, google open directory, infoseek and find a "submit an URL" (just the URL is stored) or even better "Submit a site" (you give them all kinds of info)

Then try finding some forums that might find your site interesting and then post your comments there. For instance, it is a game dev site you could post it in Announcements here at gamedev.net

All this works for me, and after a few months I have 100 hits per day and the search engines show my site.

I have submitet several site to yahoo, though, and they seem very picky on what they want to include. Strange, because they refer to to so much crap and even have broken links. I think that yahoo is going down. They will probably go bankrupt within a few years if you want my guess. Google rules!
