There is no need to use direct x 8...most of the future effecs can be simmulated through proper coding! Plus DX8b has no documentation, and the only effect I can see that they are going to add is NURBS, and phong shading, wait maybe even splines. Look on the internet for some tutorials and learn how it is done before you go around messing with M$ OOOHHHHHH! :-)

I don''t think you can have hardware programmable vertex and pixel shaders without using it or ASM.
