Bullet dents used as a decal?

I was wondering if anyone has used this idea I came up with last night: Typically, in an action game, a bullet hole will have a decal drawn on, and it'll just be a black mark. However, would it be possible to use a normal map as the decal texture and render the decal using a bump/offset map texture? That way, couldn't some materials (i.e. metal) look as if they've been dented by a bullet?

Yes but that's for actually drawing a model behind. I'm sure that using a normal map ie dot3-bump-mapping as a decal you could give the impression of a dent since making polys look non-flat is the whole point of dot3! In theory you wouldn't need any other texture where you just wanted a dent, and for a bullet hole just draw the normal decal with dot3 mapping too. It's something I've always planned to do when I get to such subtle effects. If you ever do it I'd be very interested to hear about it or see a shot.
