I've been trawling the HOWTOs etc but I can't get a good description of how to get a dial-up connection going, all the resources I can find talk about networks in general.
My brain is porridge.
I'm not a newbie but I've never wanted the internet on my Linux machine before and I'm stumped. My PC-card modem seems to be supported, and I'm running Slackware.
Where do I go from here?

you need to find a hosting provider and dial in to their network. once you have a phone number to call there should be some piece of software somewhere that will run the connection managing for ya. running a search on google for "dial-up linux" finds several providers and the corresponding software.

'kppp' should get you going - nice and simple setup.
