AI Testbeds

I've often found that the hardest part about doing a complex AI project is finding a testbed (extensible AI of some sort) to work with, so that you don't have to program an entire game to be able to play with AI. What do most of you use as a starting point? For anybody similarly interested, some good extensible AI I've come across so far: FEAR SDK - Quake 2 C-Evo - Civilization 2 remake Lux - Risk

If you're not too worried about the way things look graphically then you could try out the PathEngine testbed.

There is a 'testbed-only' SDK available publicly at the pathengine downloads page. A full version of PathEngine is integrated with this testbed. (The catch is that this version of the SDK doesn't enable you to link directly with PathEngine from a standalone app.)

Source for the PathEngine playable demo is also available, so you could use this as starting point for different AI.

There is fairly extensive documentation for the testbed and PathEngine APIs. The documentation for the demo source is currently very limited, but this will follow.
