on drawing polygons

im new here in game dev. it seems to me that this is a great community where i can talk what i really wanted to talk. im a 3rd year cs student in our university. i have been working with a 3d networked game for months with java (this is the PL that the curriculum chose as a standard since i started, though i really wanted to learn c++) for my project. i know java is meant to be slow, but i could appreciate a little help on drawing polygons. this is the flow i've been doing. -get z depth of each triangle in a model or a scene -sort them (i use quick sort) -traverse then draw in my system, it still looks smooth enough. but if u have better stuff in mind, can u please show how you do it. anyway possible is appreciated.
