Cel-Shading/NPR in Java 3D?

From my dabblings in Java 3d a few years ago I doubt Java 3D and cel shading will go together very well.

I'd have thought the one way (untested!) was to use effectively a chrome map with 3-4 different shades to do cartoon style diffuse lighting, draw an mesh of lines over the most creased areas fractionally closer (to get the 'internal' lines) and a solid black version of the object fractionally behind the object (to get the surrounding lines).
