Hoefully this is very simple. Does anyone have an example of how to just display the text in d3d9? I mean soooo basic to just show hello on the screen and thats it?

Quick [google] search for "D3DXCreateFont ~Tutorial"

The ID3DXFont stuff is probably what you'll want to look at. I personally haven't used it. I created my own font class before I realized that this existed. It's not as simple as you might think, but I believe that these extensions will make it a lot simpler than writing your own.

Well I would prefer OpenGL, but just trying to get started.

OK change question to OpenGL since I placed this in the wrong area.
For OpengGL look at NeHe lessons 13, 14, 15, and 43.
