Turning world coordinates into screen coordinates

How do I go about to turn 3D coordinates in the virtual world to 2D coordinates on the screen? I have a few models in 3D space, and I kinda need to draw some sprites in orthographic mode on top of their respective locations using screen coordinates. I assume this will require multiplying the point in question with the Transformation and Perspective matrices, but that's about as far as I got... Anyone know how it's done? Doesn't need to be that exact. I'm using OpenGL for this, but it shouldn't matter since I'm tampering directly with the matrices in the pipeline.
