load skinnedmesh from resource ?

For your first question I suggest loading the file resource in memory and then using the D3DXLoadMeshHierarchyFromXInMemory function to create the objects.

As to your second question. The only way to reduce the size of an X file is to make sure it is in binary format instead of ASCII format. You should be able to open it in any modeler that supports X files and export it. Microsofts mesh viewer might also do that. Sorry, I haven't used it in a long time.

Side note: Panda 3DMax Exporter even uses bzip2 compression on binary .X files.
