DOOM3 & Little Kids
I'm feeling really low right now.
I usually allow my brother to watch me play and occasionally let him play rated M games. He seemed to have no problem with it, he's mature enough (he's 9 years old). Counter Strike, graphics are "crude" enough so that he recognizes it as somewhat "cartoonish." Quake 3 is fun for him.
DOOM3 is also a rated M game. We watched the final trailer, which made us both really excited to buy DOOM3, and so we did. It looked really, really cool.
Cool wasn't exactly what my brother and I got: after just several days of playing (I'm at alpha labs sector 2 right now), DOOM3 has really affected my brother. The realism, the atmosphere, the gore and the scary images are really getting to him. I disallowed him from watching me anymore, but I'm still worried about him...first of all, I don't want him to have any traces of the gory stuff lingering in his mind, it isn't right for a 4th grader, and second of all, I don't want him desensitized to the violence and gore.
I'm at a loss to explain to him that DOOM3 is only a video game, just like Quake3 and Counter Strike, except it has bigger and badder graphics. And it's designed to scare him too, just like a horror movie (he's never seen any of those yet).
What should I do?
Ciph
tricky...
keeping his head clean is a good idea. do you let him watch live news? cause that can be just as bad.
easy answer, don't play it.

Make groaning noises outside his door in the middle of the night, then get a big branch with one end burning (so it looks kind of like a fireball), and then bust into his room screaming as loud as you can. Do this at about 3:00 A.M.
Don't know what it'd do for your brother, but damn would that be funny.
OK, seriously. How is it "getting to him"? Is he having nightmares or what? I guess the only thing to do would be to sit him down and explain that it's only a videogame, like you said.

Why don't you just keep it away from him? Hide te CD, rename the folder it's installed it, and play when he's not around.
I wouldn't play that game in front of little kids... it is gory, certainly... the zombies, the corpses... you probably have passed the part with the guy on the ceiling cut open but kept alive... nasty stuff. Really, the only reason to play it at all is for the lighting, art design, and the gore -- it's a bland game otherwise. Half-Life 2 I have higher hopes for.
Oh, and when I used to get scared when I was little, I remedied it by watching bright funny things like cartoons. Watch, with him, some funny movies or TV shows.

Yeah, he doesn't want to play it, so I don't have to rename the folder or anything. Hm...I guess I'll show him happy stuff...
Maybe make him watch Pokemon, he hasn't done that in ages...

I'm impressed at the level of concern for your brother. Here's what I whispered into my napping 10-year old brother's ear a few weeks ago:
"The vampire... wants you.... your blood... the darkness is coming for you.... flap flap flap"

Oh man, I used to do that all the time during childhood sleepovers. I was never sure if it worked or not, but I like to fancy the notion that it did.
