shadow mapping multiple lights

ok, i managed to add shadow mapping to my 3D engine (to be released soon) but is there a better way to add others light contribution (like other shadowing lights) than saving the result to a texture and showing the texture blended at the end ? how to add light contribution the fast and clean way ?

The approach for multiple lights is always the same:Multiple rendering passes(one light per rendering pass),and additive blending.You don't have to save anything to a texture,you can achieve the blending directly into the framebuffer.

If you're running on hardware that can handle long fragment programs you can also do the shadowing (and shading) for several light in a single pass. This will be a win if you're memory bandwidth bound and/or you have many overlapping lights.
