Accessing texture data

Hi What is the easiest way to access the data of a texture in video memory? I've looked at the gl-functions to access the framebuffer, but that requires that I render the texture first (correct?), a thing I want to avoid. Thanks

Well there's glGetTexImage which can give you a copy of some texture data, but remember that reading a texture back from video memory can be extremely slow, if you're planning to use this per-frame for some realtime application you may have to rethink how you're going to do it.

Yep, I know... I need it to save textures that has been created earlier in my app.
