When the MSXML parser gives me the characters(...) method, it passes in data as wchar_t* . What I need to do is strip it of leading and trailing whitespace. I cannot use MFC for this because of some #ifdef somewhere that says I can't because of some other stuff I'm using--thus i can't use CString. Any ideas?

You can do it by hand -- use iswspace() or a std::wstring type to handle wchar_t versions of isspace() or std::string. All of the C runtime string functions have wchar_t equivalents.
