I write class and state diagrams on paper and this has worked well so far. I also used free Poseidon UML Java app and I liked it but it's memory hungry. It needs like 256megs or more of ram. Here are some of my UML bookmarks:

The last link has UML Applied doc which is pretty good and what I use to refresh my memory on uml.

I can recommend you two good books:
UML distilled
UML2 for dummies

These are updated to reflect the 2.0 standard (in case this is important for you)

And the tool part: you should try Enterprise Architect (http://sparxsystems.com.au)
