OpenGL Wondering about screen update methods

Hi! I am wondering about screen update methods, to be more specific i am wondering about which methods there are? And are they all relevant in software as well as hardware accellerated games? I am not familiar with OpenGL, it might have it´s own rendering engine which disallows me from creating my own screen update method? (that is double buffering, triple buffering or dirty rectangle system for example) And thus make different update methods relevant in non-OpenGL API:s such as for example Allegro? Any information would be greatly appreciated!

I wouldn't quote me on this, but I believe you clear can clear the screen yourself, although methods are obviously provided for you.
